Green Brow eco homes

Green Brow is a pivotal development in Liverpool's strategy for the urban village north.  The development is the result of a competitive tender to develop an environmentally and socially sustainable residential community and to act as a catalyst and benchmark for future development in the area.

The development will deliver homes achieving the highest 'Excellent' standard under the BRE EcoHomes scheme.  This has been achieved by incorporating measures including:

  • Designing to make the best use of the available land area.
  • Development of a previously developed 'Brown Field' site.
  • High levels of off site prefabrication including a timber framed superstructure.
  • Maximized use of sustainably sourced timber products from managed forests throughout, including high performance timber windows and doors.
  • Internal water saving technology and external rainwater storage.
  • Provision of natural drying facilities to all dwellings.
  • Very high levels of thermal insulation which, in conjunction with low emission & super efficient heating systems and low energy lighting result in buildings which create relatively low CO2 emissions.
  • Recycling storage and promotion.
  • Measures to minimise the use of the private car including: 70% parking provision; home office space; cycle storage for 50% of dwellings; proximity of the development to local amenities.
  • All insulation used in the project has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than 5 and Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of Zero.
  • Ecologically biased landscaping design, produced by ecological consultants. This is aimed at providing a suitable environment to encourage indigenous species of Flora and Fauna and will include bird and lacewing boxes.
  • Information will be provided to residents to encourage the use of A rated white goods.
  • Glazing areas have been maximized to encourage natural daylight, whilst not being so large as to create potential for excessive heat loss.
  • Measures to encourage the long-term sustainability of the development include: high levels of acoustic insulation between dwellings; doors and windows with enhanced security features.
  • Provision of private and / or semi-private and shared amenity spaces.

Whilst the environmental agenda has been a strong driver in the design of Green Brow, the social factors have been critical elements to control.  A sustainable community has been designed to maximize the sense of security both within and surrounding the development.  The development induces security whilst avoiding 'fortress' measures.  We hope that the hybrid house / apartment concept with interacting semi-private and shared amenity spaces will encourage the interaction of the residents.  We hope that this will in turn result in the residents feeling truly invested in the development as a whole.
